Guardian home program

Become a Guardian family!

What is a Guardian Home?

A Guardian home is the term we use when a family has one of our amazing breeding dogs living in their home full time.

The dog is placed in the guardian home free of charge. And they stay with you for the majority of her/his life, except for when a female is being bred, or whelping and raising puppies. We have exclusive breeding rights, so she can’t be bred to males outside our program.

After the contract is fulfilled (usually by the time the dog is 4-5 years old or 3 - 4 litters), we spay/neuter and sign over complete ownership to you (the guardian family). And your little guardian dog will live out the rest of her/his life with you!

Why do we use guardian homes?

We love all of our dogs. We want to snuggle them, play with them, and get to know their personalities as we enjoy their company. In a perfect world, there would be no such thing as too many dogs! However, while that may be true for us, having all the dogs in our home is not always what is best for our dogs.

The guardian home allows each of our dogs to receive all the personalized love, attention and care they deserve. It gives our dogs the best lives possible and years to spend with families who love and adore them as family members. It keeps our dogs out of kennels and allows them to be pets first and foremost. They have two families looking out for their best interests — their forever family and us. The guardian home is fulfilling for the guardian family, the dog, and us, and it gives everyone peace of mind knowing our dogs are in the best possible situation they could be in.

What are the requirements of a family interested in being a guardian home?

Our guardian homes must meet the following requirements: (exceptions can be made for the right guardian home)

  • Live within 1 hour of zip code 49659 for a male and no more than 2 hours for a female
  • Be a homeowner at your residence
  • Have previous puppy experience
  • Have a fence suitable for keeping puppies in the yard and other animals out (above ground, not underground). To us, a secure fence means a dog cannot walk/crawl/dig under it, through it, climb it or jump over.
  • The dog must be housed indoors
  • The guardian home must not have unaltered animals in the home male or female.
  • Be able and willing to potty & obedience train
  • Fully commit to caring for a Guardian Dog, even if the dog gets injured or becomes ill.
  • Be responsible for all costs not related to breeding, including grooming, veterinary costs.
  •  The guardian family is responsible either for the transportation of the dog to us or arranging to meet us part way for pick-up of the dog for all health certifications, testing, and breeding.
  • The female cannot be outside by herself when she’s in heat, she must have her guardian family outside with her at all times.

What are the advantages for the guardian family?

  • Our Pick of the litter puppy, at no upfront charge.
  • Breeder pays for spay or neuter at end of contract.
  • Breeder pays for all breeding related vet expenses and health testing.
  • Breeder support for the life of the guardian dog.

What age do you start breeding the dog?

. Males will typically be bred at 18 to 24 months.

. Females will typically be bred at24 months.

How long does the dog need to be with you?

. The guardian family must notify us immediately as soon as they are aware the female dog is in heat. We will coordinate for her transfer as breeding takes place 10 - 15 days from the first day she comes in heat but if we have to do progesterone testing on the female she will have to stay with use for a week or two for testing.  If no testing is needed, then the female will only have to stay for a few hours and then go home.

. Male dogs the male will come to my house for a few hours for the breeding or the female will be brought to his house.

What happens during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is actually very easy.  The female will stay at her guardian family's home for her whole pregnancy. Normal play and running during the first half of pregnancy is great. After that, we limit activity to walks on a leash and NO BALL CHASING TYPE OF ACTIVITIES.

What happens during the whelping process?

The female will come to my home one week before her due date. Which will be in my home not out in a kennel. She will stay until puppies are fully weaned so between 8 - 9 weeks.

, She will be closely monitored, and no expense will be spared in her care.

What does the guardian home pay for and what does the breeder pay for?

. The guardian home pays for any normal care items for the dog. Training, grooming, routine veterinary care like checkups and vaccines, food, dishes, leashes, beds, toys, etc.  Those normal expenses one would have with any pet.

. The breeder pays for all expenses related to health certifications, OFA's (including repeat testing) like eye's, hips, elbows, heart, and testing for breeding purposes, like progesterone testing and ultrasounds. all breeding and litter expenses.

Who pays for the spay/neuter?

. The owner (Lavender Poodles & Doodles) pays for the spay/neuter.

What happens if the dog does not meet Lavender Poodles and Doodle's breeding standards?

. If the dog in your care does not meet our breeding standards, you may keep the dog. In either case the dog will be spayed/neutered after he/she is fully grown.

We work hard to select the best of the best of our dogs for our guardian homes. If you are willing to make an honest commitment to us we will be as flexible as possible to make this program work for you.

We hope that you will consider partnering with us.
